REVIEW: First Meeting

Will's Review of FIRST MEETING — from Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Chris Potter, Larry Grenadier, and Eric Harland, Live at Dizzy's Club

I have started trying something new — creating video reviews of albums, which allows me to put a voice (mine) to my writing and to provide excerpts of the music as examples of my analysis, rather than only using words to describe sounds that are (so often) indescribable.

Here is my most recent. I really like this live album from four jazz masters, recorded in 2022 at Dizzy’s (the small club within Jazz at Lincoln Center club in New York City). In essence, this “all-star” meeting defies the stereotypes about superbands. Everyone is listening, everyone plays with subtlety. It’s a strong example of contemporary jazz at a very high intuitive level.

I have two earlier video reviews that I will post here in the next few days. I hope you like this format — please let me know in the comments!
